Surviving the Fray

Sometimes life requires us to merely survive instead of thrive. It’s just the way it is. We lead busy, fragmented lives; distracted and unprotected. The demand for our attention consumes every waking hour, from things that are both within our control and things that are not. Getting by is sometimes the only option.

That, is the fray. It is the frazzle of life. Where things come undone, but you hang on. You’re surviving, but just barely. It is just the way of life at times.

But living in the fray requires that you hold onto whatever is unraveling. You may feel lonely, but you are never alone. I am reminded of a video I saw recently about a guy named Joseph, a man who is coming to terms with his addiction and the implications for his life: his marriage, his job; his future (http://vimeo.com/xxxchurch/remembermytears). His wife responds to his addiction and unfaithfulness in the most honoring way, holding back tears, saying, “I’m gonna stay faithful no matter what.” Joseph was lonely, but he is not alone.

We live our lives in the midst of many frays. And while we lead them lonely, we are never alone. There are those who wish to stay faithful to you, as a friend, brother or sister in Christ, no matter what. This the church Christ pictured: a church that struggled, yet overcame the fray. Will you choose today to live in the fray, and rise above?

How can youth workers survive the fray alongside those they lead?
1. Know the youth you lead. Like, really know them; who they really are.
2. Never let go; never. Stay faithful, no matter what. Jesus does, and so should you.
